Prayer of the Enamored Soul – Saint John of the Cross

O soul, most beautiful among all creatures,
do you know where your beloved is
and where your love is,
why do you not seek him
and move him from your breast?

Rejoice and be glad in your secret spouse,
since you have him so near
that he dwells within your breast.
There you will adore him with affection

The “Prayer of the Enamored Soul” is one of the most intense and luminous spiritual texts left to us by Saint John of the Cross (Juan de Yepes Álvarez), co-founder of the Discalced Carmelite Order along with Saint Teresa of Avila and Doctor of the Church. Written in the 16th century, in the height of the Spanish Golden Age, this prayer follows the great Christian mystical tradition, which uses the language and metaphors of the Song of Songs to describe the deep union between the human soul and the Creator, conceived as Bridegroom and Bride.

From a historical and biographical point of view, Saint John of the Cross composed these lyrics and their related theological commentaries during his years of extreme trial, including his dramatic imprisonment in the convent jail of Toledo, where he was locked away by his own brethren due to his reforms of the Order. Despite physical deprivation and loneliness, his interior life flourished into a deep spiritual freedom.
