Saint Raphael the Archangel, the guardian of travelers and the messenger of healing

On October 24th, the liturgical tradition commemorates Saint Raphael the Archangel, a figure profoundly linked to healing, protection, and spiritual guidance. This date belongs to the traditional liturgical calendar, whereas in the current Roman calendar, the celebration of Saint Raphael is joined with that of the archangels Michael and Gabriel on September 29th. The October 24th recurrence, however, remains alive in popular devotion and in the memory of many faithful who recognize the Archangel as a special protector in moments of difficulty. His name comes from Hebrew and means “God heals,” a meaning that encapsulates his mission as a messenger of divine mercy, a traveling companion, and an intercessor for those seeking comfort, health, and hope. His story is told in the Book of Tobit, in the Old Testament, where Raphael accompanies young Tobiah during a journey important for his family’s future. Initially presenting himself as a fellow traveler, the Archangel guides and protects him from dangers, helping him overcome the trials encountered along the way. During the journey, Tobiah meets Sarah, who will become his wife, and thanks to Raphael’s intervention, he is able to face the difficulties burdening the young woman. At the end of the story, the Archangel also helps Tobiah restore sight to his father Tobit, bringing serenity and joy back to the entire family. Only at the end does he reveal his own identity, explaining that he is one of the seven angels who stand before the glory of the Lord. The biblical account thus presents Saint Raphael as a concrete sign of God’s closeness, accompanying man even when the road seems uncertain and difficulties appear insurmountable. For this reason, throughout the centuries, the Archangel has been invoked as the protector of travelers, the sick, doctors, and spouses, becoming a figure dear to those facing a change, a suffering, or an important decision. His protection calls to mind not only the healing of the body but also that of the soul, because life brings with it invisible wounds, fears, and moments of bewilderment that require comfort and trust. Saint Raphael reminds us that faith does not necessarily eliminate difficulties, but can offer the strength to traverse them, helping us to recognize the good even in the most complex situations. His figure also invites us to rediscover the value of accompaniment and mutual care: just as the Archangel stands by Tobiah’s side without leaving him alone, we too can become travel companions for those in need of listening, support, and closeness. Celebrating Saint Raphael the Archangel on October 24th therefore means renewing our trust in divine Providence and entrusting to his intercession the sick, families, those who are traveling, and those who are going through a difficult period. It is an opportunity to remember that, even when we do not know the destination of our path, we can proceed with hope, asking the Lord to illuminate our choices and to grant us the strength necessary to face every trial. The message of Saint Raphael remains timely and precious: God does not abandon His children, but continues to support them through prayer, faith, and the presence of people capable of transforming their own lives into a gift for others.
