His figure holds extraordinary historical and pastoral importance: of African origin, he was the first Pope to come from the African continent, anticipating the universal catholicity of the Church by centuries. During his pontificate, Saint Victor demonstrated great strength and firmness in governing the Christian community. He was responsible for a decisive cultural and liturgical turning point: he was in fact the first to impose the use of the Latin language in the liturgy and administration of the Church of Rome, progressively replacing Greek, which had been predominant until then. This step profoundly marked the identity of the Western Church. Furthermore, Pope Victor decisively addressed the controversy over the date of the celebration of Easter, convening important councils in the West to establish liturgical uniformity so that the resurrection of Christ would always be celebrated on a Sunday, thus strengthening unity and communion among the Churches.
