Born in 1491 to a noble Spanish family, Ignatius lived the first part of his life cultivating chivalric and worldly ideals, serving as an officer in the army. The radical turning point occurred in 1521, when he was seriously wounded in the leg during the siege of Pamplona. During his long and painful convalescence, unable to read the chivalric romances he loved, he dedicated himself to reading the life of Christ and the biographies of the saints. It was then that he experienced the dynamism of spirits: a profound spiritual consolation came to him when thinking about the things of God, while the nostalgia for the world gave way to an inner void. This profound conversion pushed him to lay down his weapons to become a “knight of Christ”. After years of intense study in Paris and pilgrimages, Ignatius wrote the famous “Spiritual Exercises”, a masterpiece of Christian mysticism and an unparalleled tool for spiritual discernment, designed to help man find the will of God in his own life. In 1540, Pope Paul III officially approved the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits, known for their rigorous intellectual preparation, obedience to the Pope, and commitment to education and evangelization, became one of the main drivers of Catholic renewal.
