A simple clerk and notary of the civil court in Roman Gaul, Genesius found himself at the decisive crossroads of his life during the anti-Christian persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. When he was asked to transcribe and authenticate the death edict against Christians, his Christian and professional conscience rebelled. With a gesture of extraordinary firmness and courage, Genesius refused the task and publicly threw his wax tablets at the feet of the Roman judge. Hunted by the authorities, he was soon captured and beheaded, sealing his testimony with martyrdom and receiving what Christian tradition defines as the ‘baptism of blood’. His memory remains an eternal warning about the primacy of the human conscience and divine law over the unjust impositions of temporal power, still inspiring today those who exercise the notary profession with integrity and a sense of justice.\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
