Belonging to the legendary Theban Legion, composed entirely of Christian soldiers, Alexander lived in the 4th century and indissolubly linked his name to faithfulness to the Gospel until the ultimate sacrifice. Having miraculously escaped the famous decimation ordered by Emperor Maximian in Switzerland \u2014 where the legionaries had refused to commit acts of persecution against their brothers in faith and to sacrifice to pagan gods \u2014 Alexander undertook a journey that led him to Italy. Arrested first in Milan, he managed to temporarily escape his sentence thanks to a spectacular flight, finding refuge and new strength in Bergamo. Here, heedless of the danger and the manhunt launched by the imperial authorities, he did not hesitate to openly preach the word of Christ, converting many and strengthening the local community. Captured again, he faced judgment and death with the same pride with which he had served under the military banners, sealing his earthly journey with the martyrdom of beheading. Today, as patron saint of the city and diocese of Bergamo, his figure continues to challenge believers of every age regarding the primacy of conscience and the authenticity of a faith lived without compromise, capable of resisting the allure of power and the fear of death.\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
