Living in the 6th century, this Benedictine monk ascended to the papal throne during a time of extraordinary turbulence, marked by the Lombard invasions and the crisis of the Western Roman Empire. With extraordinary political acumen and deep spirituality, Gregory reorganized the Church of Rome, directly managed ecclesiastical assets to assist the poor, and negotiated peace for the Eternal City. His reformist work deeply touched the liturgy and gave a fundamental impulse to sacred chant, which took the name ‘Gregorian Chant’ from him. As a true shepherd animated by missionary zeal, he did not hesitate to send Saint Augustine of Canterbury [Editor’s note: Saint Augustine of Canterbury] to evangelize the British Isles. Among his most precious legacies stands the ‘Pastoral Rule,’ a true masterpiece on the nature and formation of the priestly ministry, which for centuries served as the reference manual for generations of bishops and priests.
