through Your goodness we have received this bread,
fruit of the earth and work of human hands;
we present it to You, so that it may become for us the bread of eternal life.

we present it to You, so that it may become for us our spiritual drink.<\/blockquote>

The Act of Offering of the Bread and Wine, known liturgically as the presentation of the gifts or the offertory in the Roman Rite Mass, represents one of the moments most dense in symbolic and theological meaning within the entire Eucharistic liturgy. Historically, this rite has its roots in the ancient practices of early Christian communities, where the faithful would physically bring from home the bread and wine necessary for the celebration. These elements were not simply abstract symbols, but the concrete fruit of daily work, of sweat, and of human cooperation with divine creation.<\/p>

From a theological perspective, the prayer formula (Benedictus es, Domine) is strongly indebted to the traditional Jewish blessings, the so-called *berakhot*, which Jesus himself would have recited during the Last Supper. Through this prayer, the priest acknowledges that every material good originates from the generosity and creative goodness of God (“from Your goodness we have received…”). At the same time, there is an extraordinary appreciation of human industry: bread and wine are indeed fruits of nature (earth and vine), but also the result of “human work,” thus elevating daily human activity to matter capable of being sanctified.<\/p>

A fascinating historical curiosity concerns the evolution of this rite: over the centuries, especially in the Tridentine Roman Rite, the offertory had become enriched with silent and very complex prayers of a strongly priestly and sacrificial nature. With the liturgical reform following the Second Vatican Council, the Church sought to recover the original simplicity and transparency of these formulas, which explicitly recall the dimension of the banquet and community offering. The bread offered does not remain a common element, but is handed over to God so that it may be transformed, through the power of the Holy Spirit and the words of consecration, into the Body of Christ, becoming for believers a pledge of immortality and food for eternal life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
