This is an anniversary that gathers the community around the Sacred Icon every year, intertwining faith, history, and popular traditions in a celebration deeply linked to the city’s identity. The 2026 festivities, scheduled from September 6th to 9th, also take on a special significance because the Festival of the Madonna dell’Alemanna has recently been inscribed in the Register of Intangible Heritage of Sicily, a recognition that highlights its historical and cultural value and the importance of a tradition passed down for generations. The devotion to the Madonna dell’Alemanna has its roots in ancient history, in which documents, traditions, and popular tales intertwine. According to one of the most widespread versions, the icon was brought to Gela by the Knights of the Teutonic Order, who arrived in the city during the period of its refoundation commissioned by Frederick II. Popular tradition, on the other hand, tells of a discovery made in 1476, when a farmer supposedly found the image of the Madonna while working the land, giving rise to a devotion destined to become one of the most important spiritual benchmarks for the Gela community. Maria Santissima dell’Alemanna has been the patron saint of Gela since 1650, and over the centuries, the population has entrusted the city to her protection during the most difficult moments, also attributing to her the protection from the historic 1693 earthquake and the bombings that struck the territory in 1943. The heart of the festival remains the great procession of September 8th, when the Sacred Icon travels through the city streets accompanied by thousands of the faithful. The route is marked by stops at symbolic places in Gela, moments during which prayer also becomes an opportunity to entrust the deceased, the city, those who govern it, and the activities that animate the territory to the Madonna, leading up to the traditional blessing of the sea and the countryside. It is a celebration in which the religious dimension deeply unites with the daily life of the community, transforming the festival into a collective moment that involves different generations. Alongside the religious celebrations, initiatives of popular tradition also develop. In the days leading up to the festival, the Palio dell’Alemanna returns, bringing medieval atmospheres back to the historic center through costumed figures, processions, music, and performances, while the 2026 program also includes the return of the ‘Palliantino’, the suggestive competition on a greased beam suspended over the sea, one of the most curious and spectacular events of the festival. At the end of the day dedicated to the patron saint, the procession and celebrations give way to the traditional fireworks display over the sea, closing a festival in which the sacred and the popular continue to coexist.
