An ancient priest of the Christian community of Rome, Nicomedes tied his testimony of faith to the darkest hours of imperial persecutions, under Domitian or Trajan. In a time when professing the name of Christ meant exposing oneself to certain condemnation, this zealous priest did not hold back. His charitable mission focused on assisting imprisoned Christians and performing a work of mercy as risky as it was essential: giving Christian burial to the bodies of the martyrs, rescuing them from oblivion and outrage. Discovered while performing this pious duty, he was ordered to renounce his faith and offer sacrifices to the pagan gods. Facing the imperial ultimatum, Saint Nicomedes chose loyalty to the Gospel, facing martyrdom. He was brutally beaten to death along the Via Nomentana, where his body was laid to rest, sealing with his blood a life entirely given to God and the most vulnerable brothers and sisters.\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
