Born in Venice to a noble family, young Gerard decided to devote himself to God by entering the Benedictine monastic order. His life took an unexpected turn when, while traveling to the Holy Land, he was detained in Hungary by King Saint Stephen. Struck by his profound culture and holiness, the monarch wanted him as a tutor for his son, Prince Emeric, and subsequently appointed him the first Bishop of Csan\u00e1d. Gerard thus became one of the main apostles of Hungary, spending his existence on the evangelization and spiritual growth of the Magyar people. His fidelity to the Gospel found its supreme fulfillment in martyrdom: during a violent pagan revolt that broke out after the death of King Stephen, Gerard was brutally pierced by spears and rolled down Buda hill inside a barrel.
