Prayer of the Spirit of Truth – Saint Thomas Aquinas

Ineffable Creator, who from the treasures of your wisdom
have chosen three hierarchies of angels
and disposed them in marvelous order above the empyrean heaven,
and have arranged the parts of the universe with such gentle law;
you, who are the true source of light and wisdom,
and the supernatural principle,
deign to infuse upon the darkness of my intellect
a ray of your clarity,
removing from me all darkness of sin and ignorance.
You, who make eloquent the tongues of children,
train my tongue
and infuse upon my lips the grace of your blessing.
Give me sharpness in understanding,
capacity in retaining,
method and ease in learning,
subtlety in interpreting,
abundant grace in speaking.
Guide me in the beginning,
direct me in the progress,
bring me to the end.
You who are true God and true man,
and live and reign forever and ever.
Amen.

The Prayer of the Spirit of Truth, traditionally attributed to the “Doctor Angelicus” Saint Thomas Aquinas, represents one of the pinnacles of Christian intellectual spirituality. Historically, this prayer was recited by scholars, theologians, and students before approaching the study of sacred texts or academic research. Thomas Aquinas, a monumental figure of the 13th century and a pillar of Scholasticism, never separated intellectual activity from the life of prayer, perfectly embodying the motto fides quaerens intellectum (faith seeking understanding).

From a theological perspective, the text reflects the profound Thomistic awareness that every form of human knowledge, especially theological knowledge, is a gratuitous gift that descends from God, the “source of light and wisdom.” The invocation opens with a magnificent praise of creation and the celestial hierarchy, then descends with humility into the heart of the human intellect, recognized as needing to be freed from the “darkness of sin and ignorance.” It is an admirable synthesis of speculative rigor and mystical abandonment.

A fascinating piece of trivia regarding this prayer concerns its enduring relevance. Even today, in many pontifical universities and theological institutes around the world, students and professors invoke the Holy Spirit through the words of St. Thomas before the beginning of the academic year or exams. The request for “sharpness in understanding, capacity in retaining, method and ease in learning” is not a utilitarian prayer for academic success, but a consecration of one’s study to the service of truth and Christian charity.
