Born in Greek Calabria, Nilus was the greatest exponent of Italo-Byzantine monasticism, a giant of faith who knew how to unite the depth of the Eastern tradition with the roots of the Western one. A man of great culture, prayer, and meekness, he spent his life founding numerous Basilian-rule monasteries in Southern Italy, transforming them into beacons of civilization and spirituality in an era marked by deep turmoil. Forced to flee from the fierce Saracen raids that devastated the South, the holy abbot undertook a long pilgrimage that led him to Lazio. Here, with his unstoppable spiritual energy, he laid the foundations for the famous Greek Abbey of Grottaferrata, the last of the Italo-Byzantine monasteries to survive to this day. Saint Nilus remains to this day an extraordinary symbol of ecumenical dialogue, of resistance through culture, and of total abandonment to Divine Providence, capable of speaking to the heart of contemporary man.\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
