Originally from Ireland, Gall was among the favorite disciples of Saint Columbanus, whom he followed on his fervent missionary journey through Gaul and Switzerland. During this evangelization trip, struck by a severe fever, he had to separate from his master and decided to settle as a hermit in the wild woods along the Steinach River. In that isolated place, alternating contemplative prayer with manual labor and preaching to the local populations, he laid the roots of what would become an extraordinary spiritual and cultural blossoming. Indeed, around his hermitic cell grew, over the centuries, the famous Abbey of Saint Gall and the Swiss city of the same name, guardians of a millennial tradition of faith, culture, and knowledge.
