Prayer to Obtain the Spirit of Wisdom – Saint Robert Bellarmine

O God of truth and author of all wisdom,
you who search hearts and know secrets,
send forth from heaven upon me your Spirit of wisdom and understanding.
Illumine my mind so that I may comprehend your wonders
and guide me in the paths of your justice.
Give me the grace to always prefer heavenly things to earthly ones,
to seek You above all else
and to serve my neighbor with sincere charity.
May your grace be my strength, now and forever.
Amen.

The “Prayer to Obtain the Spirit of Wisdom” attributed to Saint Robert Bellarmine represents one of the highest peaks of Counter-Reformation spirituality and the doctrinal heritage of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church. Saint Robert Bellarmine, a Jesuit, distinguished theologian, and cardinal who lived between the 16th and 17th centuries, is a key figure in the history of modern Catholicism, known not only for his apologetic rigor and profound biblical erudition, but also for his extraordinary spiritual character and his sincere evangelical humility.

From a theological point of view, this prayer is rooted in Christian pneumatology and the tradition of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, with a particular focus on Wisdom (donum sapientiae). For Bellarmine, true wisdom is not a mere accumulation of academic or theological knowledge, but rather a gift rightly nicknamed sapere a Deo—the “tasting of the things of God.” This perspective fits perfectly into the historical context of the Council of Trent and the spiritual renewal of the Church, where it was urgent to rediscover the centrality of divine grace over the emerging rationalism and doctrinal tensions of the era.

Interestingly, although Bellarmine was a giant of intellect and one of the most feared defenders of the Catholic faith in the theological controversies of his time, his private life and spiritual writings reveal a soul that was deeply contemplative and poor in spirit. This prayer perfectly reflects such a virtuous dualism: the saint’s brilliant mind bows before the “God of truth,” asking that the intellect be submitted to charity. Praying with these words today means renewing one’s commitment to seeking the Truth not as an abstract concept, but as a living Person, orienting every earthly action toward the eternal perspective of blessed eternity.
