As the third pastor of the prestigious Church of Syria, Ignatius lived in an era of a fierce and bloody empire, which culminated in his death sentence under the reign of Trajan. Transported in chains from Antioch to Rome, he faced a long and painful journey that was not merely a march toward martyrdom in the Colosseum, but a spiritual pilgrimage of inestimable value. Along the way, the saint wrote seven sublime letters to the Christian communities, true masterpieces of early theology, in which he expressed his ardent desire for union with Christ through supreme sacrifice, emblematically defining himself as ‘God’s grain to be ground by the teeth of wild beasts so that I may become pure bread of Christ’. To him we also owe a historical legacy of fundamental ecclesial importance: he was the first to define the Church with the name ‘Catholic’, outlining its universality and hierarchical unity.
