Sacris Solemniis (Hymn for Corpus Christi) – Saint Thomas Aquinas<\/h1>
Let sacred solemnities be accompanied by joy,
and let praises resound from the depths of the heart;
let the old things pass away, let everything be new,
hearts, voices, and deeds.

The most recent supper of the night is recalled,
in which it is believed that Christ gave the lamb and unleavened bread
to his brothers, according to the laws
granted to the ancient fathers.

After the typical lamb had been eaten,
with the legal feasts of the law completed,
as food for the group of twelve,
He gives Himself with His own hands.

The Word made flesh makes true bread
flesh by His word:
and wine becomes the blood of Christ,
and if sense fails,
to confirm a sincere heart,
faith alone suffices.

Therefore, such a great Sacrament
let us venerate bowing down:
and let the ancient document
give way to the new rite:
let faith provide a supplement
for the failure of the senses.

To the Begetter and the Begotten
be praise and jubilation,
salvation, honor, power also
and blessing be:
to the One proceeding from both

The Sacris solemniis<\/i> is one of the absolute masterpieces of medieval Christian hymnography, composed by the celebrated Dominican theologian and philosopher Saint Thomas Aquinas around 1264. The writing of this hymn takes place in a historical and liturgical moment of extraordinary importance: the official institution of the solemnity of Corpus Christi, desired by Pope Urban IV with the bull Transiturus de hoc mundo<\/i>. The Angelic Doctor was entrusted with the arduous task of drafting the entire divine office for this new feast, an assignment that brought to light texts of inestimable doctrinal and poetic value, among which also appear the Pange Lingua<\/i>, the Verbum Supernum<\/i>, and the Lauda Sion<\/i>.<\/p>

From a theological perspective, the Sacris solemniis<\/i> represents an admirable synthesis between the biblical theology of the Old and New Testaments and scholastic speculation on transubstantiation. In the opening stanzas, the hymn recalls the transition from the Jewish Passover \u2014 symbolized by the sacrificial lamb \u2014 to the Christian Eucharistic banquet, in which Christ himself offers his own body as food to his disciples. The central stanza constitutes one of the highest moments of Christian poetry of all time: the proclamation of the mystery of the Word incarnate who transforms bread and wine into his Body and Blood. Saint Thomas addresses the limit of human reason when faced with the divine mystery, pointing to faith as the only instrument capable of grasping the profound reality of the sacrament.<\/p>

One of the most fascinating historical and liturgical curiosities related to this hymn concerns its last two stanzas. The penultimate stanza, universally known as the Tantum Ergo<\/i>, was extracted from the original hymn and is traditionally sung during Eucharistic Benediction and the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, enjoying an autonomous liturgical life that is widespread throughout the Catholic world.
