Italian Sailor’s Prayer – Composed for the Royal Navy

Almighty God, Lord of the sky and the sea,
whom the winds and the waves obey,
we, people of the sea and of war,
officers and sailors of Italy,
from this sacred ship we lift our hearts to You.

Save and exalt, O Lord, in Your power,
our Homeland.
Grant our seas empire in justice and peace.

Protect our homes, our families,
make our enemies strong and furious in the hour of combat,
but bless and show favor to those who serve and fight for You.

Bless, O Lord, our flags.
Bless those who keep watch and those who fight for Italy.
So be it.

The Sailor’s Prayer is one of the most intense and identity-defining spiritual and patriotic texts in the Italian military and civil tradition. Originally composed for the Royal Navy, this invocation embodies the dual spirit of those who live at sea: on one hand, the awareness of their own smallness and vulnerability in the face of nature’s majesty and the Creator’s power (“Lord of the sky and the sea, whom the winds and the waves obey”); on the other, a strong sense of duty, sacrifice, and safeguarding of the Homeland.

From a historical perspective, the prayer was born in an era when the Italian navy sought a spiritual symbol capable of uniting crews of every rank and station under a single mantle of faith and protection. Its drafting reflects the classical theology of divine protection for seafarers, a theme deeply rooted both in the Holy Scriptures and in the popular piety of coastal peoples, transposed here into the specific context of service to the State and the fleet.

Today, reciting this prayer represents a solemn moment not only aboard Italian Navy ships during the lowering of the flag or on special occasions, but it also resonates in the hearts of many faithful and devotees who recognize in it a spiritual heritage linked to the world of trades and seafaring people. It continues to exert a particular fascination, uniting religious devotion with a deep respect for a life spent in service to the community and national security.
