Quartu Sant’Elena is preparing to experience one of the most important and heartfelt events in its calendar, the patronal festival dedicated to Saint Helena the Empress, a celebration that this year will accompany the city from September 7th to 20th and weaves together history, devotion, popular traditions, and events capable of involving the entire community. The central commemoration falls on September 14th, the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a date that makes the bond between Quartu and its patron saint particularly significant. According to Christian tradition, in fact, Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, is linked to the discovery of the True Cross during her journey to the Holy Land. This is precisely why the Quartu festival takes place in September, even though the Saint’s feast day in the liturgical calendar is May 21st. The relationship with Saint Helena is so deep that the city itself bears her name: in 1826, the ancient name of Quarto was joined by that of the Saint, giving rise to Quartu Sant’Elena. A bond that returns to life every year through days of celebrations and events that transform the city center into a large gathering space. The 2026 festivities were preceded by one of the most evocative and intimate moments of tradition, the ritual of dressing the simulacrum. The processional statue of the Saint is prepared through gestures handed down over time: it is cleaned and then adorned with lace cuffs, the crown, and the cross, elements that also include votive offerings donated by the faithful and which tell the personal and collective relationship that the community maintains with its patron saint. From September 7th, the Basilica of Sant’Elena became the center of spiritual preparation with the triduum of prayer, while from September 10th the festival comes alive with a program that extends to the squares, streets, and the most representative places of the city. An edition that also takes on a particular value of encounter thanks to the presence of the Sant’Elena Musical Band from Birkirkara, Malta, a twinning born around the common devotion to the Saint and destined to turn into an opportunity for knowledge and friendship between the two communities. During the days of the festival, there is also space for music, exhibitions dedicated to grapes and the grape harvest, tastings of local products, and events dedicated to local culture, but the most anticipated moment remains that of Sunday, September 13th, when the simulacrum of Saint Helena will travel in procession through the streets of the city center accompanied by Committees, associations, confraternities, folk groups, and the many faithful who take part every year in one of the most solemn moments of the festival. At the end of the procession, the blessing will be imparted with the relic of the Lignum Crucis, once again recalling that bond between Saint Helena and the Cross that represents the very heart of the commemoration. The following day, Monday, September 14th, Quartu will celebrate its patron saint with Masses that will accompany the entire day and with the solemn concelebration at 11:30 am in the Basilica of Sant’Elena. The festival will then continue in the following days with dialect comedy and sports initiatives, arriving at the weekend of September 19th and 20th, when one of the most representative events of the city’s traditions will return: the Grape Parade, with the etnotraccas, floats, traditional carts, Quartu farmers, and folk groups coming from different locations in Sardinia. It will be a long procession dedicated to the agricultural world and popular culture, accompanied by the distribution of grapes and traditional music. The conclusion of the festivities will be entrusted to the Qurri 2026, the Sant’Elena Festival race, with a competitive ten-kilometer race and a trial also open to amateurs. The patronal festival of Quartu Sant’Elena thus tells the story of a city that, through the figure of its Saint, also recovers part of its own history. There is Saint Helena the Empress, a figure linked to the memory of the Cross and the history of Christianity, but there is also a community that over the centuries has chosen to entrust such an important place to its patron saint that it even linked its name to that of the city. Between the ancient rite of dressing, the great procession, the celebrations in the Basilica, the music, the grapes, and the traditional carts, Quartu thus returns to celebrate not only its patron saint, but a bond that continues to cross time and reunite an entire community every year.
