The city that guards the Holy House, traditionally identified as the dwelling where Mary was born, grew up, and received the angel’s announcement, experiences the feast of its Patron Saint in the heart of one of the world’s most important Marian pilgrimage sites. For the 2026 solemnity, Loreto dedicated an entire week of preparation, which began on August 31st with prayer, adoration, and Rosary events, leading up to the central days of September 7th and 8th, when the city gathers around the Basilica of the Holy House. The vigil, Monday, September 7th, was marked by the traditional torchlight procession along the streets of the historic center, preceded by the celebration of Mass and the First Vespers of the solemnity. Faithful and pilgrims from various locations joined the light of the torches and the recitation of the Rosary, together with representatives of the Loretan districts in historical costumes and pilgrims who arrived from Ciociaria, in a procession that every year turns the city streets into a long path of prayer and devotion. However, the heart of the feast arrives on Tuesday, September 8th, the day dedicated to Mary’s birth. At 11:30 AM, in the Pontifical Basilica, the Solemn Eucharistic Celebration is scheduled to be presided over by Monsignor Fabio Dal Cin, Prelate and Pontifical Delegate, featuring one of the most symbolic moments of the day: the lighting of the ‘Lamp of Peace for the World,’ intended to be placed inside the Holy House, in the most sacred place of the Sanctuary. Representatives of the Council of Christian Churches of the Marche also participate in the celebration, in a gesture that takes on particular value in the context of an edition dedicated to the invocation of peace and the desire to unite different Christian confessions in a common prayer. At the end of the celebration, there will be an act of entrustment to the Madonna of Loreto for the children who, throughout the year, have been placed under her protection, followed by the Angelus prayer on the Basilica’s parvis, the blessing of the aircraft, and the traditional flyover by the Italian Air Force, which pays homage to the Virgin of Loreto as the Heavenly Patroness of aviators. It is one of the most evocative moments of the day, where the religious dimension of the feast meets a tradition that has long linked the Sanctuary to the world of flight. But the celebrations do not stop at the Basilica. On September 8th, the city also experiences popular festivities, with the traditional fair, evening events, and the conclusion entrusted to a fireworks display. Thus, Loreto celebrates its Patron Saint inside and outside the Sanctuary, alternating the most solemn moments of prayer with the life of a city that, for this anniversary, welcomes pilgrims and visitors. It is precisely the presence of the Holy House that makes the Nativity of Mary in Loreto different from any other September 8th celebration. Here, the feast of the Virgin’s birth is experienced beside the walls that tradition connects to her earthly life, transforming a liturgical anniversary into a direct call to the history of Mary and the mystery of the Incarnation.
