Saint Caprasius of Agen: The courage rediscovered in the shadow of the martyrdom of Saint Faith

Today the Church commemorates Saint Caprasius, a 4th-century martyr in Agen, France. His story is inextricably linked to that of the young Saint Faith, a tale of unwavering faith that continues to challenge and inspire believers of every age. During the anti-Christian persecutions led by the fierce governor Dacian, Caprasius had initially chosen the path of caution, hiding in the surrounding mountains to escape the fury of the executioners. However, providence and the example of another soul would soon change the course of his destiny. From afar, he witnessed the martyrdom of Saint Faith, a young girl who faced the torture of the gridiron with superhuman and miraculous courage. That spectacle of grace and total surrender to God deeply shook Caprasius. A sudden and ardent spiritual fervor drove him to overcome his fear: he descended from the mountains, entered the heart of the city, and presented himself to the authorities, publicly confessing his faith in Christ. His testimony was brief but luminous: immediately condemned to death, he was beheaded on the spot, joining Saint Faith in blood and glory. The figure of Saint Caprasius reminds us that Christian witness does not fear human weakness, because divine grace knows how to transform even fear into an act of supreme love.
