Over the centuries, the place has become a fundamental stop for pilgrims and travelers, also becoming part of the great European network of Michaelic routes.
Devotion has also left very evident traces in the Italian landscape. Churches, sanctuaries, chapels, and works of art dedicated to Saint Michael can be found in numerous regions and testify to how important his figure has been for local communities. In many towns, September 29th is still linked to the patron saint’s feast day, with religious celebrations, processions, and moments of gathering that combine the spiritual dimension with the more popular one.
The recurrence also has a connection with institutions. Saint Michael is, in fact, the patron saint of the State Police, which celebrates its anniversary on September 29th. The choice is linked to the symbolic meaning attributed to the Archangel as a defender and guardian, an image that over time has also been associated with the service performed to protect the community.
The date of September 29th does not concern only Michael. In the liturgical calendar, it is indeed the feast of the three Archangels mentioned by name in the Bible: together with him, Saint Gabriel and Saint Raphael are celebrated. Three figures with different characteristics: Michael is associated with the defense against evil, Gabriel with the announcement, and Raphael with protection and care. A common celebration that brings together some of the most important angelic figures of the Christian tradition.

Saint Michael remains the symbol of a struggle that the Christian tradition interprets as that between good and evil, but also a figure associated with protection and custody. It is perhaps precisely this combination of faith, history, and symbolism that has allowed his cult to cross the centuries and arrive still alive at the September 29th of today.
