Memorial of Saints Sergius and Bacchus: Fidelity beyond the insignia of power

Today the Church remembers Saints Sergius and Bacchus, two illustrious Roman officers of the imperial army stationed in Syria in the 4th century. Already highly favored by Emperor Maximian for their talents and demonstrated loyalty, the two soldiers had to face the supreme test of their lives when they were ordered to take part in military sacrifices at the temple of Jupiter. Choosing not to renounce their Christian faith, Sergius and Bacchus publicly broke with the logic of imperial power. For this affront, they suffered brutal humiliation: they were stripped of their military insignia and paraded through the streets of the city wearing women’s clothing, in an attempt to break their dignity. Despite the outrage, the two martyrs remained steadfast in their witness of love for Christ. Bacchus suffered the martyrdom of being whipped to death, while Sergius was beheaded shortly after. Their memory remains a shining beacon of evangelical consistency, reminding every believer that the true dignity of man lies in fidelity to God, even at the cost of one’s life and every public insult.
