How to obtain the Pope’s Apostolic Blessing for Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation

Let’s start from the beginning: What is the Pope’s Apostolic Blessing? The answer is quite simple: it is a blessing bestowed by the Holy Father to grant a plenary indulgence to those who request it, provided certain conditions are met. Here’s how to obtain it for Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation.

To many people, receiving thePope’s Apostolic Blessing may seem like an impossible feat. In reality, we are talking about a special blessing provided for by the Catholic Church and entrusted to the Office of the Papal Almoner.

This title derives from the fact that the Pope, as Supreme Pontiff, is the Bishop of the Apostolic Church of Rome, founded by Saints Peter and Paul, the apostles of Jesus.

One of the best-known examples of an Apostolic Blessing is the Urbi et Orbi rite, a special blessing bestowed by the Pope both upon his election to the papal throne and on Christmas and Easter. As is well known, this blessing grants the faithful a plenary indulgence.

Obviously, this type of blessing is special; therefore, it can be requested only in certain cases. These include the first three sacraments recognized by the Catholic Church: Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation.

What procedure to follow

There are several ways to request the Pope’s Apostolic Blessing:

  1. Directly at the Vatican: For those who do not wish to wait for delivery or who are already on site, it is possible to visit the offices of the Office of the Apostolic Almoner. These offices are located inside the Sant’Anna Entrance (to the right of the Colonnade in St. Peter’s Square) and are open from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Monday through Saturday);
  2. Online: This is certainly one of the most convenient ways to do this. In fact, without having to travel to the Vatican and without writing a letter or sending a fax, you can request the Apostolic Blessing from the Supreme Pontiff with just a few clicks—simply visit the official website. Once there, you can choose which parchment template to use and proceed with the donation, which will be given to charity for those in need;
  3. By Letter or Fax: If you are not very familiar with digital procedures, you can submit your request (form available here) with all the necessary information:
  • Applicant’s first and last name;
  • First and last name of the recipient of the blessing;
  • Reason for the request;
  • Date, Name of the Church, and Location where the sacrament took place;
  • Address to which the diploma should be mailed and the corresponding payment amount.

All of this should be forwarded to:

  • plus shipping costs: 7 euros for standard mail / 13 euros for express courier service (DHL).

The donation may be sent only and exclusively after receiving the Pope’s Apostolic Blessing and may be made via postal money order (enclosed with the shipment) or online payment by credit card.
