Today the Church remembers Saint Apollinaris, Bishop of Valence, who lived between the 5th and 6th centuries, a luminous figure of a shepherd and defender of the faith in southern Gaul. Brother of Saint Avitus of Vienne, Apollinaris distinguished himself by his extraordinary pastoral zeal, working tirelessly to restore liturgical and moral discipline in an era of great transitions and cultural and political ferment. His action was not limited to the spiritual care of the flock entrusted to him: he actively participated in important provincial councils and did not hesitate to raise his voice to defend the freedom of the Church against the abuses and interference of the Burgundian kings. For this firm fidelity to evangelical principles and ecclesial autonomy, he paid a very high price, suffering exile. His life remains a model of moral integrity, apostolic courage, and deep love for the Christian community, testifying how fidelity to Christ must translate into selfless service and a strenuous defense of justice.
