Today the Church celebrates the memorial of Saint Bertin of Sithiu, a luminous figure of Benedictine monasticism and the spiritual and civil history of 7th-century France. A disciple of Saint Columbanus at Luxeuil, Bertin answered the call to bring the light of the Gospel to the wild and rugged regions of northern Gaul. Together with Saint Omer, he founded the famous Abbey of Sithiu, which was destined to become a beacon of spirituality and a formidable engine of economic and cultural development. Under his wise spiritual and material guidance, the monastery was not only a place of prayer and study, but also the center of a vast rural reclamation project that transformed the face of the territory, admirably combining contemplation and action. The witness of Saint Bertin reminds us how the Christian faith, embodied in work and dedication to others, knows how to build not only souls, but entire civilizations.
