Saint John of Lodi: the disciple of Peter Damian who combined ascetic rigor and pastoral charity

Today the Church celebrates the memorial of Saint John of Lodi, a luminous figure of the 11th century who knew how to combine the radical nature of the contemplative life with the self-denial of episcopal service. A Camaldolese monk who grew up in the silence and ascetic rigor of the hermitage of Fonte Avellana, John was the favorite disciple, the closest collaborator, and the biographer of the great reformer Saint Peter Damian. From him, he inherited a visceral love for the truth and the reform of the Church, combined with a deep interiority nourished by constant prayer. Subsequently called to lead the diocese of Gubbio as bishop, Saint John did not abandon his monastic spirit, but translated it into an extraordinary closeness to the people, distinguishing himself in particular for his boundless charity towards the poor and the marginalized. His life remains a shining model of how authentic contemplation does not separate one from the world, but compels one to serve it with humility and selfless love.
