Today the Church remembers the biblical and spiritual figure of Saint Melchizedek, King of Salem and priest of God Most High. Having lived during the time of the patriarch Abraham, this enigmatic character from the Book of Genesis occupies a prominent place in the history of salvation. In the episode of his meeting with Abraham, Melchizedek offered bread and wine, performing a gesture that Christian tradition has interpreted from its origins as a clear prefiguration of the Eucharist. The Letter to the Hebrews in the New Testament elevates Melchizedek as a symbol of the eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ, describing him as a priest ‘without beginning of days or end of life,’ superior to the Levitical priesthood. His figure continues to inspire the faithful, reminding us of the deep and mysterious roots of the worship rendered to the one and true God.
